Surrounded by Reality: The Best of Doug Moe
on Madison
Doug Moe
“The inimitable chronicler of Madison.” David Maraniss
About
the Book
“In this book you’ll find stories about the man who got rich
writing the Oscar Mayer wiener jingle, as well as one about a young hitchhiker
who had decided to try to start her life over in Madison, but never made
it to the city. Taken together, I hope the columns offer a fair view of
recent and not-so-recent life in Madison—the best place to live
on the planet, in my admittedly biased opinion.” —Doug
Moe

Praise
for Surrounded by Reality
"There's a reason Doug Moe is consistently voted Madison's best columnist.
This compilation of his columns from The Capital Times is proof enough.
Not only does Doug have an uncanny knack for being a great listener, he
has the ability to turn what he learns into great stories for others to
share. Doug Moe is another reason why Madison is such a special place,
even if some don't think it's "real" enough. We like Doug and
our city just the way they are." Dave Zweifel, Editor, The
Capital Times
"Humor and sensibility in the same author with a determination to
get to the truth. It is uncommon but it is Doug Moe. The only person I
know who can write and actually knows how many square miles comprise reality."
Paul Soglin, former Mayor of Madison
"Take a close look at the legendary Madison, Wisconsin, at it's
finest. The controversial city has sparkled brightly, and Doug Moe has
written it like it is." Phil Hellmuth, Jr., poker icon and
author
"Doug is a great storyteller with the insight, humor and clarity
of a master. He's the only writer that can make me laugh and cry in the
same article." Bobby Hinds, Lifeline founder and jump rope
king
"There's a good reason why Madisonians turn to Doug Moe first thing
when they open their newspapers. He's an old-style journalist-who knows
everyone and gets the tips first and fast-and he has heart, humor and
integrity. Slats Grobnik would be proud." Jacquelyn Mitchard,
author and columnist
