About the Book
Few writers have captured the spirit of rural life and the majestic setting
of an English landscape as brilliantly as Thomas Hardy, author of Far
from the Madding Crowd and Tess of the d'Urbervilles. His books
have inspired generations since they were written and he remains one of
the most popular of English novelists and poets. We can follow his footsteps
and those of his characters over windswept uplands and through quiet villages.
Little has changed since Hardy was born near Dorchester more than 150
years ago.
